Landmark Atrium in Central | Contemporary Japanese Artist Rokkaku Ayako Presents 'THE ISLAND - ONIGASHIMA' at Landmark Atrium
Description
Landmark Atrium proudly unveils a new Art LANDMARK experience, created in collaboration between globally renowned artist Rokkaku Ayako and GALLERY TARGET. This interactive art installation, 'THE ISLAND - ONIGASHIMA', marks the largest-scale work of the artist to date. From now until April 17th, the atrium of Landmark Atrium will transform into a vibrant and sensory art experience, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in this captivating and mysterious artistic island.
Landmark has always been committed to bringing world-class art experiences to Central. This time, we are excited to present Rokkaku Ayako's first solo exhibition in Hong Kong, featuring the largest-scale installation art piece ever displayed in a commercial space, 'THE ISLAND - ONIGASHIMA'. Internationally acclaimed for her dynamic finger-painted works, Rokkaku Ayako depicts a vibrant and whimsical fantastical world that has captivated audiences across Asia, solidifying her status as one of the most sought-after figures in contemporary art.
Exploring 'THE ISLAND – ONIGASHIMA': An Immersive Dreamlike Island
The artwork draws inspiration from the Japanese folk tale 'ONIGASHIMA'. When Rokkaku Ayako decided to hold her exhibition in Hong Kong, she was inspired by the shared island geography of the two places. She incorporated the imaginative 'ONIGASHIMA' from the Japanese folktale 'Momotaro'. Additionally, the legendary image of Momotaro as 'half-human, half-demon' in the story cleverly symbolizes the boundary between dreams and reality. This fantastical element inspired Rokkaku Ayako to blend playfulness and mystery in her installation, blurring the line between the artist and the audience.
The artwork is meticulously crafted with soft forms and a variety of textured fabrics, inviting not only visual appreciation but also physical interaction from the public. Standing at a towering height of six meters, the installation majestically unfolds in the atrium, creating a museum-like interactive zone. Visitors are encouraged to touch, feel, and even lean on the artwork, crafting their own artistic journey based on their preferences. One can imagine themselves stepping into a gigantic, vibrant soft sculpture and sensing its textured pulse through touch, fully immersing themselves in this enchanting and mysterious dreamlike island. Inside the art installation, a unique pathway is designed to display 12 wooden sculptures for visitors to view up close, along with 11 paintings hidden within the installation. These carefully selected precious works are not for sale, solely presented to offer visitors a layered artistic discovery experience.
To celebrate the official opening of 'THE ISLAND - ONIGASHIMA', Rokkaku Ayako graced the venue with a captivating finger-painting performance. The audience witnessed her spontaneous creation process as she applied paint directly with her hands, bringing her signature characters and landscapes to life. This deeply embodied her artistic philosophy of 'connecting creation with intuition' and the intimate link between the artist and her creations. The celebration reception attracted guests from all over Asia, including the renowned Thai actor-singer Bright.
A self-taught artist, Rokkaku Ayako first came to prominence in 2006. Her works blend comic elements with abstract emotional hues, and she creates without sketches, improvising as she goes to directly express her artistic emotions. Known for her signature 'big-eyed girls' and vibrant dreamlike backgrounds, she has earned high praise from art collectors worldwide. She has also received the Grand Prize at the 'GEISAI' art festival hosted by the contemporary art master Murakami Takashi. This collaboration once again demonstrates Landmark's commitment to bringing the world's most creative and renowned talents to Central, crafting unprecedented cultural experiences for Hong Kong.
